Dave Peck's Software: Walk Score Scalable API

(Much Of 2009)

Every day, over three million requests are made to the Walk Score API by customers like Zillow. To ensure availability and scalability, we built the API's "front end" on Google App Engine.

At the same time, calculating a Walk Score is I/O and compute intensive. App Engine isn't so great for tasks like that, so the "back end" of our API runs on a cluster of Amazon EC2 instances.

At Google I|O 2009, @jesseko, @jlivni, and I gave a talk about tying App Engine and AWS together. You might enjoy watching the video.
